Prioneris philonome, also known as the Redspot Sawtooth, is a butterfly species in the Pieridae family. Native to South Asia, particularly in India and Sri Lanka, it is recognized by the red spots on its wings and the distinctive sawtooth edges that give it its name. The forewings of the butterfly are white with greenish veins, while the hindwings are typically pale with subtle greenish hues. The butterfly's larvae feed on plants from the Capparaceae family. Known for its striking appearance and vibrant colors, the Redspot Sawtooth can often be found in gardens, forests, and areas with dense foliage.

Stichophthalma sparta, commonly known as the Jungle Queen or Sparta Glassy Tiger, is a striking butterfly species found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. This butterfly is part of the Nymphalidae family and the Stichophthalma genus, which is well-known for its beautiful, vibrant coloration and semi-translucent wings. The Jungle Queen typically features rich orange and black forewings, with the hindwings being translucent or "glassy," often with hints of green or blue.

The larvae of Stichophthalma sparta feed on plants from the Passifloraceae family, particularly passionflowers. This butterfly is often found in forested areas, where it flutters gracefully through the undergrowth. Its vivid colors and delicate, translucent wings make it a favorite among butterfly enthusiasts and nature lovers. The common name "Jungle Queen" reflects its regal and stunning appearance, making it one of the most admired species in the Stichophthalma genus.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Your butterfly frame is a delicate piece of natural history and should be handled with care to preserve its beauty for years to come.

  • Display indoors in a dry, stable environment away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause natural colors to fade.
  • Avoid humidity and moisture. Keep the frame away from bathrooms, kitchens, windows with condensation, and other damp areas.
  • Keep away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, heaters, and strong heating vents.
  • Handle gently. When moving or hanging your frame, hold it by the frame itself and avoid touching the butterfly, wings, or other specimens.
  • Dust carefully. If needed, gently dust the outside of the frame or glass with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the glass or frame.
  • Do not open the frame unnecessarily. Opening the enclosure can expose the specimen to dust, moisture, and accidental damage.

BOOK LICE AND PEST CARE

Although rare, it is possible for natural butterfly specimens to occasionally develop book lice. These are extremely tiny insects that can sometimes appear as small, dust-like specks inside the frame.

If you notice what appears to be dust moving inside the frame, carefully open the frame and gently remove the insects from the specimen and interior surfaces. Once the frame has been cleaned, place the entire frame in a sealed plastic bag and freeze it for 48 hours. This can help eliminate any remaining book lice.

To help prevent book lice, keep your frame in a dry environment and away from excessive humidity or moisture.

If you have any questions or would like guidance on identifying or treating book lice, please contact us—we’re happy to help!

NATURAL VARIATIONS
