The ailanthus silkmoth (Samia cynthia), also known as the Cynthia moth, is a striking species native to East Asia but has also been introduced to other parts of the world. This large moth is recognized for its beautiful, greenish-yellow wings adorned with eye-catching patterns, including reddish-brown and purple markings. The ailanthus silkmoth’s larvae feed on the leaves of the ailanthus tree (also called the "tree of heaven"), which gives them their name. The moth's silk is sometimes harvested, though it is not as commercially valuable as that of the silkworm (Bombyx mori). The adult moth has a relatively short lifespan, typically living only a week or two to mate and lay eggs. Despite its beauty, the ailanthus silkmoth can become a pest in areas where the ailanthus tree is abundant, as large populations can cause damage to trees.
