common castor & striped blue crow shadow box

This piece features the Common Castor (Ariadne merione), a small butterfly widely distributed across South Asia. Its bright orange wings are patterned with fine brown lines that resemble leaf veins. Interestingly, the caterpillars feed almost exclusively on castor plants, giving the species its name.

It is paired with the Striped Blue Crow (Euploea mulciber), a graceful butterfly found throughout South and Southeast Asia. Its dark wings shimmer with subtle blue or violet stripes. Like other members of its family, it contains toxins from host plants that deter predators.
