This piece features the Red Cracker (Hamadryas amphinome), a butterfly native to Central and South America. Its mottled blue-gray wings conceal a flash of red on the hindwings. Males are known for producing a distinctive cracking sound by snapping their wings — one of the few butterflies capable of making noise.

It is paired with the Red Flasher (Panacea prola), found in tropical forests from Mexico to the Amazon Basin. The upper wings are a deep, velvety brown, while the underside reveals a vivid crimson patch that startles predators when exposed. Its flash of red has earned it the name “flasher.”
