Cicadas are large, distinctive insects known for their loud, buzzing calls, which are produced by the males to attract females. Found in many parts of the world, especially in warm climates, cicadas are known for their prominent, membranous wings and large, bulbous eyes. Cicadas are famous for their periodic life cycles. Some species emerge only once every 13 or 17 years, spending most of their lives underground as nymphs before emerging as adults to mate. Their powerful calls are produced by vibrating specialized structures called tymbals, located on their abdomen. Cicadas play an important ecological role by feeding on plant sap and, when they die, providing a nutrient-rich food source for other animals.
