peacock pansy & blue moon butterfly octagon golden brass frame

$45.00

The Peacock Pansy butterfly (Junonia almana) is a species commonly found across South and Southeast Asia. Known for its vivid orange wings, it features large, eye-catching blue and black spots on the forewings, resembling the eyes of a peacock, which is how it gets its name. The hindwings are brown with orange edges. The Peacock Pansy is typically seen in open woodlands, gardens, and grasslands, where its larvae feed on plants like Passiflora and other members of the passionflower family. This butterfly is known for its erratic flight and its ability to blend in with its surroundings when at rest due to its camouflaged underside.

The Blue Moon butterfly (Hypolimnas bolina) is a species found in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Australia. The males are particularly notable for their brilliant blue wings with dark borders and white spots, which give them an almost iridescent look. The females, in contrast, are darker and more subdued in color, with brown and white patterns. The Blue Moon butterfly frequents tropical and subtropical habitats, where its larvae feed on Clerodendrum and Vitex plants. This butterfly is often admired for its graceful flight and its eye-catching, metallic-like appearance, especially when the sunlight hits its wings.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Your butterfly frame is a delicate piece of natural history and should be handled with care to preserve its beauty for years to come.

  • Display indoors in a dry, stable environment away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause natural colors to fade.
  • Avoid humidity and moisture. Keep the frame away from bathrooms, kitchens, windows with condensation, and other damp areas.
  • Keep away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, heaters, and strong heating vents.
  • Handle gently. When moving or hanging your frame, hold it by the frame itself and avoid touching the butterfly, wings, or other specimens.
  • Dust carefully. If needed, gently dust the outside of the frame or glass with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the glass or frame.
  • Do not open the frame unnecessarily. Opening the enclosure can expose the specimen to dust, moisture, and accidental damage.

BOOK LICE AND PEST CARE

Although rare, it is possible for natural butterfly specimens to occasionally develop book lice. These are extremely tiny insects that can sometimes appear as small, dust-like specks inside the frame.

If you notice what appears to be dust moving inside the frame, carefully open the frame and gently remove the insects from the specimen and interior surfaces. Once the frame has been cleaned, place the entire frame in a sealed plastic bag and freeze it for 48 hours. This can help eliminate any remaining book lice.

To help prevent book lice, keep your frame in a dry environment and away from excessive humidity or moisture.

If you have any questions or would like guidance on identifying or treating book lice, please contact us—we’re happy to help!
