The owl butterfly (Caligo atreus) is a large, striking butterfly found in the rain forests of Central and South America. Named for the owl-like eyespots on its wings, which serve as a defense mechanism to ward off predators, this butterfly’s wings have a dark, brownish coloration that helps it blend into the forest floor. The larvae feed on plants like banana and passionfruit, and the adults are nocturnal, often seen resting during the day and flying at night. Despite their large size, they are surprisingly agile in flight. The eyespots on their wings are believed to confuse or intimidate predators, mimicking the eyes of larger animals like owls.
