io moth pair - male and female

the io moth is not only known for its vibrant eye spots but also has some fascinating quirks. one fun fact is that the eye spots on its hindwings are used as a clever defense mechanism -- when startled, the moth flashes these "eyes" to startle predators, making them think they're facing a creature much larger. the io moth exhibits sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females look quite different, as you can see in this display. males have bright yellow forewings, while females have brown ones. their caterpillars are covered with spines that can sting painfully so it is best to avoid if you ever catch them in your garden. their name derives from greek mythology, specifically from Io, a mortal woman who was transformed into a cow by Zeus to protect her from Hera's jealousy.
