Found across Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. Known for its striking red wings and abdomen, particularly in males, and frequent inhabitants of ponds, rice fields, and other still or slow moving freshwater habitats. Females and younger ones are more subdued in color (as you can see in this frame). They are a strong flyer and an effective predator, feeding on small insects, especially mosquitoes. Its adaptability to a variety of environments makes it a widespread and ecologically significant species.
